In a bid to promote the khadi industry, the state government has tied up with online retailers to sell khadi products. The khadi clothes that are to be sold online will be designed by trained designers from National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The products would be first launched on online shopping portals like Flipkart and Snapdeal.
The UP government has signed a five-year tie-up with NIFT, who would provide special training on khadi to 60 students. These students would be expected to share their knowledge with workers in various khadi centres across the state. The main motive is to improve the quality of khadi products and ensure that new designs have a modern look. It is aiming to bring khadi back. And since the rural economy is involved, every khadi product purchased is actually a contribution towards improving the financial condition of the rural poor. While meetings with the officials of Snapdeal and Flipkart are still underway, the photo-shoot of khadi products is completed. The government has kept Rs 4.5 crore as the initial budget and the products would offer discounts so that sales pick-up.
